Lakewood Cemetery's Garden Mausoleum and Reception Center

This article introduces how HGA Architects and Engineer conceives and builds
the 141-year-old Lakewood Cemetery's Garden Mausoleum and Reception center where
many will take their final rest, sensory comforts are important. They like to
add the new facility without disturbing the complex's long-established
integrity.

The 24,500-square-foot, two-level mausoleum is built into the hillside, its
green roof a seamless extension of the adjacent 4 acres of landscaping. Bronze
doors open to the foyer and reception areas, a calming union of mahogany walls
and marble flooring bathed in daylight from floor-to ceiling windows. A sweeping
Venetian-plaster wall leads to the chapel, its angled bronze-framed windows set
into deep tiled recesses. The crypts and columbariums, burial bays branch out
from a central hallway with inset flooring of luminous green honey, and pink
onys lit by windows and skylights that naturally dispel gloom while maintaining
quiet dignity.

This elegant project respects and honors the deceased by creating a sacred
landscape at the same time. The design carefully considers the way to bring
light into the spaces. It is a very quiet environment, fitting of the reflective
moment. Light and space are so beautifully balanced and restrained.
